RANZCR Defined Scope pathway

We received notification from RANZCR of the Defined Scope pathway.

What are the implications of a Defined Scope Pathway?

Our Opinion:

Our opinion comprises these key findings:
1. The defined scope is limited to Interventional Radiology, Interventional Neuroradiology and Paediatrics.
2. It does not lead to Fellowship. The IMG must undertake the full assessment process.
3. The assessment path is Specialist: Defined Scope and the full $10,590 fee is payable.
4. IMGs assessed as “substantially comparable” are required to undertake 12 months of upskilling at a fully accredited teaching practice.
5. AHPRA pathways are either Provisional Competent Authority or Limited Specialist pathways.
6. We need to confirm with Medicare that they will:
  • Recognise the IMG as a Specialist with a Defined Scope of Practice
  • Grant Medicare Provider Numbers for the Defined Scope

UNLESS the practice has a specific need for the IMG to practice within the Defined Scope of Practice, we think a better approach is either:
  • Full Specialist assessment; or
  • Dual Specialist and Area of Need assessment; or
  • Short-Term Training
