What is the RANZCR process?
For IMG's or Registrars that exhaust all attempts at the Phase 2 Examinations the process comprises:
1. RANZCR emails a letter advising all attempts have been exhausted.
2. The Doctor can lodge an "appeal" based on either Consideration of Special Circumstances OR Reconsideration, Review and Appeal.
3. If lodged the College will undertake no further action whilst the "appeal" is being considered.
4. If not "appeal" is lodged OR the "appeal" process is exhausted the College will then AHPRA advise that the Doctor has exhausted all attempts and the College does not provide further support for the specialist pathway.
5. AHPRA will contact the Doctor and provide them with "time" to show evidence of another AHPRA pathway they can take. "Time" is generally:
a. 14-30days if their registration is current; and
b. if the registration renewal is in process then AHPRA will not
proceed with the renewal. The registration will be closed.
6. If no alternate AHPRA pathway is provided then the registration will be amended and the Doctor cannot practice.

How best to manage the attempts?
Practices need to monitor the attempts made at the Phase 2 Examinations.
Doctors and Practices need to avail themselves of Consideration of Special Circumstances (CSC) or Reconsideration, Review and Appeal processes based on specific circumstances. These policies allow extension of time, additional attempts or conceded passes.
Whilst RANZCR has timeframes for commencement of Phase 2 and for completion the CSC policy allows application to be made on strong ground to extend timeframes.
